The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.

Nature‘s green lungs, where the air is pure, the trees stand tall, and life hums in a symphony of chirping, buzzing and rustling leaves.

Trees—they produce the vast majority of the oxygen we need to survive, they provide us with much-needed shade on hot days, and they’re just plain beautiful. For all of those reasons and many more, protecting the trees on our planet should be a real priority for all of us and thankfully, recently, it has. Of course, with millions of hectares of forests being chopped down every year, we still have a long way to go, but we are making progress, and the International Day of Forests is proof of that.

So this day of forests, plant a tree or two even a fruit tree! Enjoy some fresh air by taking a nature walk! Conserve trees by recycling paper, rent books from libraries instead of buying and continue raising awareness on forest preservation.

The late Professor Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate once said, “we owe it to ourselves and to the next generation to conserve the environment so that we can bequeath our children a sustainable world that benefits us all…”
