Teenagers face real issues daily as this is the most awkward growth stage in their lives.
Their bodies are undergoing major internal and external changes which can lead to
struggles. They face pressures from parents, school, friends, and work which may leave
them feeling bereft, drained, and misunderstood. Validation, care, and understanding
from central figures in their lives goes a long way to smooth out the upheaval that they
face as they transition. It is vitally important to identify and deal with the problems the
teenager is facing early on before things get out of hand, or they seek attention and
advice from unwanted sources. Parents and caregivers need to build a healthy
relationship with the teens and handle the concerns effectively. One size does not fit all
when it comes to seeking a solution. Sometimes we may need to borrow a leaf from
several sources as some problems may have different effects but the same foundation.
A teenager may start experiencing changes in sleep patterns, and eating habits, declined
interest in normal and healthy activities, dropping grades in school and college, and
preferred isolation. These are all early signs of depression. Increased demands to
perform, competing with friends, etc may also lead to unwanted stress. It is important
that parents and caregivers remain vigilant towards these signs at an early stage may
help to block/stop further damage and guide them towards healthy ways of dealing with
their concerns.
